Country Classically Italy and Piedmont where Barolo, Barbaresco and Langhe must be on the list.
Style Red fruit but floral aromas, high acidity and high tannins along with medium - high alcohol and is full bodied and a savoury tar edge. Age reduces the colour depth.
Flavours to expect Red fruits and a floral nuance, when oak has been used - toast and vanilla, as it ages the fruit will disappear and be replaced by a meaty savouriness and paler garnet..
Characteristics Red fruit flavours, high acidity and tannins with medium - high alcohol . Tarry meaty flavours with age - some say that they have a rose aroma.
Problems It has high quality potential but needs low yields to acheive it. It is difficult to grow ( needs the right position and dry weather for fruit set then a long warm - not hotseason) and equally difficult to vinify then, tannin management is key!
Points of Note Nebbiolo is grown mainly in Piedmont and some in Lombardia, but has not travelled in the same way as many Italian grapes have. Ageing capabilities depend on quality, Barolo 9-20 years, Barbaresco 8-15 with Nebbiolo d'Alba at 3-7 years.
